Our Work

Our lumber reclaiming process at the Arctic Plank facilities in Iceland has been designed to process our pallets through an efficient five-step process while recycling old metal and sawdust along the way.

After the pallets arrive at the Arctic Plank headquarters we start by organizing them by types of wood and then by thickness. The pallets are then dismantled and sent to our facility to be rendered into hardwood flooring.

We take special pride in the fact that we use 100% of the material from the pallets. All spill material that cannot be used for the deck for wood flooring is used for furniture manufacturing. The metal that is removed is recycled and sawdust is collected and re-used to make organic soil.

After the pallets have been dismantled they are denailed with the use of specially designed drill and nail pullers. Although the denailing process can be tedious it pays to be diligent in order to maximize the amount of usable parts of the pallets and protect our machines further down the line in the process. Sometimes we find amusing artifacts such as musket balls and old hand drill bits. All of the nails and other metals that are removed are then recycled.

Pallets that are cleared by the final sweep of the metal detector are moved to the saw. Here the wood is sliced into one-inch planks and we get our first look at the true color and grain. It is always exciting to see an old grey beam with paint chips and rough exterior reveal its inner beauty with rich red tones and a variety of grain patterns.
